For the benefit of those who want to learn Japanese (NIHONGO)\n\n---\"The history of MANA(KANJI) & KANA\"---\n\n1. In the early 7th century,Japanese have imported Chinese-character system for writing letters,but they used it as phonetical-usage,not as charactristic-meaning-usage.It is called \"MANYO_GANA\" 万葉仮名 or \"MA_GANA\"真仮名.\n\n ---- NOTE: KANJI漢字(Chinese character) in block style \"KAISHO楷書\" was called \"MANA\"真名,at the ancient days in Japan ,which means \"true-name\" or \"true-letter(or character)\" ,\n compared with the \"KANA\"仮名 which means \"provisional-name\" or \" provisional-letter(or character) \" ---- \n\n2. Among the 8th~9th centuries,for the usage of character as in origin-Chinese,and for translation into Japanese(NIHONGO),people were beginning to use a partition of one MANA真名 (=KAISHO楷書= KANJI漢字 in block style) \nSuch as カout of 加, タ out of 多, ナout of 奈.\nThis is called \"KATAKANA\"(in ro-ma_ji)\"カタカナ\"(in katakana)\n\n3.And,probably,in the 9th or 10th century,the more&more-cursive style of SOUSHO草書 became acceptable for writing.\nSuch as ひ made from 比, ら made from 良, か made from 加, な made from 奈...\nThis is \"HIRAGANA / ひらがな\"\n\n ----NOTE:SOUSHO草書 = KANJI in cursive style,\nKANJI in semi-cursive style is called GYOUSHO行書 ----\n\n4. In the middle of 19th century,\nDr James Curtis Hepburn, an American medical missionary,has published a \"Japanese-English and English-Japanese Dictionary\" both in ROMAN and in KANA.\nAnd in its 3rd edition(1887),he took the ROMANIZING-NIHONOGO method of the RO-MA_JI_KAI / 羅馬字会 in adoption to his method.it was widespread in Japan.\nIt is called \"ro-ma_ji in HEBON / ヘボン style\".---ji / 字 [ じ ] means printed letter or character , So to write Japanese by using the letters(or Capitals) from Rome , it is called \"ro-ma_ji de kaku\" / ローマ字 [ じ ] で書 [ か ] く, and also to type Japanese by using the letters (or Capitals) from Rome ,is that \"ro-ma_ji nyuu_ryoku / ローマ字 [ じ ] 入力 [ にゅう・りょく ]---(羅馬字会 / Ro-ma_ji_kai is the association of Romanaizing-study which was established by Japanese people in 1885 , and maybe you want to know,why does putting \"R\" in Ro-ma_ji to indicate \"L\" sound ? Sorry ,i am not sure, but i can easily guess ; Since there is not distinction between \"R\"sound and \"L\"sound in Japanese language,so they had to choose one of them,and they decided to take \"R\" , because it was from and out of \"Roma\" )\n\nAs you see,in HIRAGANA,\nHI=ひ \nRA=ら \nGA=が\nNA=な\nHIRAGANA / ひらがな is used as the MORA.\n: MORA is the minimum unit of voice-length----------\n(1)a sound which includes only one-vowel like [ \" あ/a \" , \" か/ka \"]\n is regarded as 1-MORA,\n(2) \"n\"or\"nn\"-sound ん is also regarded as 1- MORA,\n(3) and mute-[q]sound っ is also regarded as 1-MORA \n [this is a small form of HIRAGANA つ ,when typing this , you should put the same consonant as double like \" t(ta)/っ(た) \" or \" p(pa)/っ(ぱ) \" ] \n(4)きゃ/kya , きゅ/kyu , きょ/kyo , ぎゃ/gya ,\nぎゅ/gyu, ぎょ/gyo ,しゃ/sya , みゃ/mya...etc.\n---those kind of 33 sounds such as ; [consonant\"k\" , \"g\" , \"s\",\"z(j)\",\"t(ts)(ch)\",\"n\",\"h\",\"b(v)\",\"p\",\"m\",and \"r(l)\"\n+ y \n+ vowel \"a\" or \"u\" or \"o\"]\n are also regarded as 1-MORAs.\n(5)long-vowel or double-vowel such as \n[ あー/a-(a:) , いい/ii , えい/ei ] \nis regarded as 2-MORAs. \n ----------for analyzing some of the natural languages.\ni said \"some of\" , that\'s because not all natural languages have this MORA-unit,because each one-MORA should be pronounced in the same length of time-line when they are in a same & standard context,just like the Music-quarter-note in the same bar.And more than one MORA can combine into the one-syllable such as \"a_i\" 愛 ,\"ko_i\" 恋 both of these have two-MORAs but make one-syllables;this kind of syllable is so called \"multi-syllable\"(or \"heavy-syllable\" in linguistics-term usage).\nJapanese language is one of the MORA languages , so if you want to speak Japanese fluently,you should get used to this MORA-multi(or -heavy)-syllables.\nAnd the good-practice is the only way to get it.\n\nSO nowdays,\nWe use KATAKANAカタカナ as the substitute for so-called mono(or light-only)-syllables for copying the sounds of foreign languages,or for expressing by onomatopoeia and mimesis (or mimics), or to emphasize the specific-word phonetically from other words in the same written-sentence. \nKANJI漢字(mainly in block style : KAISHO楷書) as the characters,\nand HIRAGANAひらがな as the MORAs.\nAND also,you know,Ro-ma_ji is still very useful for typing.
